The Z warriors soon notice something is wrong. Gohan who is studying as usual gets changed and flies out of the window. They all meet up, including Bulma, and agree it's Freeza. Freeza, now repaired from his defeat, lands in his ship with his father, King Cold. The Z warriors are terrified as they are too weak to battle Freeza. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a strange, purple-haired teenager lands and kills all Freeza's men. He then pulls out his sword and cuts Freeza himself in half. King Cold is devastated. He asks to see the kid's sword, which he hands over. King Cold tries to kill the kid, but he too ends up dead.

The stranger comes down to where everyone else is and tells them that Goku should arrive soon. Vegeta refuses to believe that this guy is a Saiyan and Yamcha gets angry that he wouldn't tell them his name, or how he knows Goku. In the end they decide to give him a chance and sit and wait for 2 hours. During this time Bulma notices how much the kid looks like Vegeta.

Finally Goku arrives wearing stupid clothes and is surprised that everyone knew he was there. Everyone laughs, and Goku tells them how he crash landed on a planet where the inhabitants healed him, fixed his ship and gave him these clothes. Goku then notices the strange kid that claimed to be a Super Saiyan. Goku agrees to go off so he could tell him something, although his friends were suspicious.

When they are alone, the stranger apologizes to Goku for being so mysterious, and says his name is Trunks. He tells Goku that he had come back from the future to warn them about the androids that would come in 3 years. He also gives Goku a medicine to cure a heart virus he would catch. Goku finds out Trunks can turn into a Super Saiyan whenever he wants. Trunks tests Goku's strength by swiping at him with his sword many times really quickly. Goku stops the sword each time. Trunks also reveals he is the son of Bulma and Vegeta, which Goku finds hilarious. He says that he will be back in 3 years and they should start training. Before Trunks leaves, Goku promises not to tell them who he was.

Goku returns to everyone else but is reluctant to tell them what the boy said. Piccolo, however heard everything. They tell the others all about the androids, but leave out everything about Trunks's identity. Everyone goes off to train and say they will meet in 3 years.

Tien and Chaozu train together, and Krillin and Yamcha train their own ways. Vegeta, now even more determined to be a Super Saiyan, trains under gravity. Piccolo stays with Goku and Gohan where they get into all sorts of trouble, like Chi Chi making Goku and Piccolo learn to drive.

Three years have passed and everyone meets up on the island where Trunks told them to. Bulma is there with baby Trunks, and is confused that Goku knows the baby's name and who his father is. Yajirobe arrives with some senzu beans, and everyone goes to look for the androids. Yajirobe stays with Bulma and baby Trunks because he can't fly. Yamcha is the first to come across two androids, and is impaled by one of them. The others notice his Ki and fly toward him. Krillin takes Yamcha back and gives him a senzu bean, while the others fly to a better place to fight. Goku starts to fight with android #19, but his heart virus is slowing him down. In the end he has to go back home to take his medicine.

Everyone back with the androids is shocked to find Vegeta can turn into a Super Saiyan. Vegeta says it was because of his anger that others were stronger than him, and kills android #19. #20, who is actually Dr. Gero, gets scared and runs off to hide. Vegeta takes a senzu bean and everyone follows him to look for the android. Trunks arrives from the future and sees they are fighting the wrong androids. #20 tries to absorb Piccolo's energy, but Gohan saves him. He then blows up the ship with Yajirobe, Bulma and baby Trunks in it and runs away. Bulma tells them #20 was actually Dr. Gero who made the androids and #19 made him into an android too. She says that #17 and #18 are the dangerous ones.

The Z warriors hurry to Dr. Gero's lab but #20 (Dr. Gero) gets there first and wakes up the androids. When everyone else gets there, #17 and #18 have killed their creator and awakened android #16. The androids start to fly towards Goku's house with the Z guys following. Vegeta catches up with the androids and first fights with #18. When the others catch up, Trunks tries to talk Vegeta out of fighting, but Vegeta only threatens him. #18 starts to win and when Trunks tries to help his father, his sword is almost broken by the strength of the android. Tien and Piccolo fail in fighting #17 and Krillin decides he would also be too weak. The androids get bored and fly off, saying they were only meant to fight Goku.

Everyone eats a senzu bean and Piccolo flies to Kami's place. He asks Kami to fuse with him, but Kami says they must wait for a while. The androids take a break to get in trouble with the police while Trunks and Krillin tell Chi Chi to take Goku to Muten Roshi's place. They all go in the plane. Trunks tells Gohan and Krillin that going back in time would not change his future, but would create another dimension. He said he came back so that he could find out the androids weaknesses. Bulma calls the plane and sends them a picture of a second time machine. Trunks says it's his, so they go to take a better look. It is not from the same time as him, in fact 3 years after, and they see something has hatched from an egg inside.

Kami finally decides to fuse with Piccolo. Piccolo then goes to look for whatever hatched. He finds the monster in the city and asks what it is. It says it is Cell and was created by Dr. Gero from the cells of all the Z warriors and King Cold. Dr. Gero had left Cell unfinished, and 3 years after Trunks (in his future) blew up the lab, Cell was finished by a computer. In Cell's future, he had killed Trunks and taken his ship. He also tells Piccolo that he needs to absorb #17 and #18 to become perfect. This story buys Piccolo some time and he regenerates his arm which Cell had injured. They start fighting again and Trunks and Krillin arrive.

Cell manages to escape and goes around the city absorbing people. Trunks and Krillin go to break the undeveloped Cell so they wouldn't have to fight 2 of them. They go to the lab and destroy the still in progress Cell. They also find the blueprints for #17 which they take to the Capsule Corp. Dr. Briefs and Bulma say they will try and find a weak spot. In the city, Cell finds Krillin but is then scared off by Tien and Piccolo.

Goku is now recovered and teleports himself and Gohan to where Trunks and Vegeta were training. They all go to the room of spirit and time at Kami's lookout. Mr. Popo says Vegeta and Trunks can go in first. In the room, time passes slower and one day normally is a year in the room.

The androids arrive at Kame house and see the non-Saiyan Z warriors. Piccolo and #17 decide to have a fight on the next island. Piccolo tries to do a Ki attack, but it has no effect on the android. Cell feels the energy and flies over. Krillin flies to get a machine Bulma made to deactivate the androids. Cell arrives at the island and surprises them. He snaps Piccolo's neck then throws him in the sea. Cell starts to fight #17 until #16 takes over. After a while, Cell finds an oppertunity to absorb #17. Before he can get #18, Tien starts shooting Ki at Cell. He had to let the androids get away so that Cell wouldn't become perfect. The androids escape and Tien, worn out from the attack, falls to the ground. Before Cell can get up, Goku comes and takes Tien and Piccolo, then teleports them all to the room of spirit and time. Cell goes to look for #18 and Krillin gets the machine from Bulma.

Back at Kami's lookout, Trunks and Vegeta come out of the room, both a lot stronger than before. Bulma arrives and gives them some new clothes and they go to look for Cell. Goku and Gohan enter the room next. Vegeta finds Cell and has some fun beating him up, as his power is now so much higher. While this is happening, Krillin has found android #18, but does not want her to die by being deactivated. Vegeta agrees to let Cell become perfect so it will be more of a challenge, but Trunks won't let him. Krillin goes up to #18 and breaks the device. Trunks and Vegeta are still arguing and don't notice that Cell has seen #18 on the island below.

Trunks pounds Cell as he tries to get past him, and Cell is sent into some rocks where he tunnels under the ground. Cell and Vegeta want Cell to become perfect, but Trunks, Krillin and #16 don't, and keep knocking them away from #18. Cell is angered and blinds everyone with a Taiyoken, letting him absorb the android. After the perfect transformation, Vegeta starts attacking Cell again, but this time he is overpowered. Vegeta is knocked out by Cell. Trunks, not wanting his father to die, lets Cell fight him instead. Krillin takes Vegeta away to get healed leaving Trunks to deal with Cell.

Goku and Gohan are training in the room of spirit and time. Gohan has learned to turn into a Super Saiyan, and Goku was showing him some attacks. Cell says that in 10 days there will be a tournament. If he is not killed by the end, he will destroy the world.
